Gratitude, happiness orientation, and coping mechanisms are important constructs within positive psychology that contribute to psychological well-being and adaptive functioning among emerging adults. The present study aimed to examine the relationships among gratitude, happiness orientation, and coping mechanisms, as well as the mediating role of happiness orientation in the relationship between gratitude and coping mechanisms among emerging adults. The study employed a quantitative research design and included a sample of 126 college students (63 males and 63 females) from colleges in Kozhikode district, Kerala. Data were collected using the GRAT 16-Item Scale, the Orientation to Happiness Scale, and the Brief COPE Scale. The findings revealed significant positive relationships between gratitude and happiness orientation, gratitude and coping mechanisms, and happiness orientation and coping mechanisms. Significant gender differences were observed in gratitude and happiness orientation, with female students reporting higher levels than male students. However, no significant gender difference was found in coping mechanisms. Mediation analysis further revealed that happiness orientation significantly mediated the relationship between gratitude and coping mechanisms, indicating that gratitude contributes to better coping through fostering a stronger orientation toward happiness. The findings highlight the importance of gratitude and happiness orientation as positive psychological resources that promote adaptive coping among emerging adults. The study has implications for mental health professionals, educators, and counsellors in developing interventions aimed at enhancing psychological well-being and resilience among young adults.
